SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
ESWT Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is highly effective in reducing pain, improving recovery times and restoring dysfunction. It is ideal for treating both chronic and acute musculoskeletal conditions, such as tendons, muscles and joints.
Focused & Radial Shockwave Therapy
At the clinic we offer the more effective focused shockwave (true shockwave), as well as radial shockwave (pressure wave) and EMTT® treatments. Having all three technologies sets us apart from other clinics, and means we can offer more effective treatment options for patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff, tennis elbow, patella tendinitis, hamstrings, achilles, and low back pain.
Shockwave therapy is an evidence based, non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-intensity sound waves to stimulate tissue regeneration and promote healing in the body.
Shockwave therapy is approved by NICE for chronic musculoskeletal conditions. With a success rate of up to 85%, 4 to 6 sessions of shockwave therapy can make a huge difference to the patient and help them recover from pain and dysfunction. Shockwave Therapy is the gold standard treatment for plantar fasciitis, as recommended by NICE (UK).
Focussed shockwave therapy is more effective than radial pressure wave therapy because it delivers precise, high-energy waves that penetrate deeper into tissues, allowing for targeted treatment of specific areas, promoting faster healing and better outcomes for chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Patients with low back pain that combine shockwave, osteopathy and EMTT®, do better than osteopathy alone.
Shockwave Therapy - The Benefits
Advanced STORZ shockwave technology helps patients by stimulating the body's natural healing process:
Increases blood supply
Modulates inflammation
Stimulates tissue repair
Reduces acute and chronic pain
Accelerates healing
Focused area of targeted treatment
Non-invasive
No anaesthesia or numbing agents needed
Short treatment time
Long lasting effect

Your Treatment
We will take a detailed medical history from you to learn about the history of the symptoms and to gain important additional information by asking specific questions. This is then followed up by a hands-on examination using special orthopaedic tests, if required.
In some cases you may feel mild discomfort at the beginning. However, treatment is delivered with low amounts of energy at first, which is then increased as the body gets used to it.
Shockwave and EMTT is not a short-term single treatment therapy. The benefit is cumulative with treatments typically given weekly. The patient is advised to commit to the prescribed weekly treatments otherwise the treatment effect may be diminished.
Shockwave therapy is often given in conjunction with exercise rehabilitation.
Our shockwave equipment is by the Swiss company Storz Medical - which is widely considered to be the best available. It is the same equipment used by major NHS/Private Hospitals and elite sports clubs around the world.
FAQs
-
Shockwave therapy is suitable for adults.
-
Shockwave therapy is not suitable for those who:
* Are pregnant
* Had a steroid injection to the site within the last twelve weeks
* Have a blood clotting disorder
* Are taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication
* Have cancer or infection to the treatment area
* Are under 18 (with the exception of Osgood Schlatters disease)
-
Each therapy session lasts between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the disorder being treated.
-
You may experience some discomfort during treatment but the pain should be tolerable. Due to the analgesic effect of Shockwave Therapy many patients report immediate pain relief following treatment.
-
Yes. It has NICE guidance for a large number of indications and is used within the NHS.
-
The number of treatment sessions will vary depending on the condition being treated. On average, four to six sessions are required at weekly intervals. The healing/recovery process may continue for another couple of months after treatment has finished.
-
The effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on the human body has been intensively researched for more than three decades. For individual medical conditions such as heel pain (plantar fasciitis), studies have now clearly proven it is effective for up to 90% of patients.
Many patients report being pain-free or experiencing significantly reduced pain after just one or two sessions. Regained freedom from pain or freedom of movement restores some their quality of life.
-
Shockwaves can treat both long-term chronic conditions and newer injuries. There is a great deal of evidence to show that Shockwave Therapy can achieve great results even with historical conditions.
-
Shockwaves are high-energy sound waves which are transmitted to the affected area to accelerate healing. The treatment increases blood flow, decreases localised pain and stimulates cell regeneration – this encourages the body to repair itself. Shockwaves also break down injured tissue and calcifications.
-
Some private health insurance providers have cover for Shockwave therapy – please ask your provider for more details. Please note there may be an excess to pay.
